Day 10 – Another Concert Night!

Wednesday, July 11th

I finally got to walk to the other end of Perugia! I knew I wouldn’t leave without doing it! I ended up going alone. Mohit said he didn’t want to see anymore churches (though he ended up going back to San Pietro), and Maxim had to practice. There’s nothing wrong with some alone time.

I had to go through the main Piazza to get to San Agostino and San Angelo – my two main destinations. I was also going to pass by the Etruscan Arch, the Porta del Cassero, and maybe, if I had enough energy, would make my way up north to see a monumental cemetery and yet another church (San Bevignate). I really only made it to San Angelo, Porta del Cassero, and the Etruscan Arch (pretty anticlimactic as it was under construction and I could hardly see past the scaffolding!). San Agostino was closed and I was told that San Bevignate was as well. I didn’t want to make a whole big trek just for a cemetery!

All during my trip, I had to ask people if I was going in the right direction. It was very confusing because San Angelo is also called the Church of the Archangel Michael. I believed they were two separate entities so after visiting the latter, I was searching for the former! Oh silly American! The cool thing about this church was that it was centrally planned rather than being a basilica like all the others. This style made it a lot quainter.

The Porta del Cassero was also a pretty cool place. It’s also known as the Musuem of the Etruscan walls. Throughout the interior of this tall tower, there is information about the growth of Perugia over time, but of course, the words were all Italian and I couldn’t make one thing out! That being said, every window was open to a beautiful view, and at the end of all the stairs, I emerged at the top of the tower overlooking all of Perugia – pretty wondrous!

Tonight was the second student concert. I really enjoyed this one! The passion and emotion that all the musicians put into their performances were remarkable! What a talented bunch we have here in Italy! An Italian News Station even came to record Maxim’s performance for Italian television.
