Emma Richmond (violin, viola)
Emma Richman is a New York-based violinist and chamber musician. She holds a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree from The Juilliard School, under the instruction of Juilliard String Quartet first violinist Areta Zhulla, and was selected as one of fifteen students to receive the Juilliard Career Advancement Fellowship upon her graduation in May 2023. A Minneapolis native, Emma began studying violin at the age of 5 with Susan Crawford, and later studied intensively with Minnesota Orchestra concertmaster Erin Keefe. She developed a passion for chamber music from an early age, studying in the Artaria Chamber Music School, mentored by Artaria String Quartet second violinist Nancy Oliveros. Emma is the second violinist of the New York-based Marian String Quartet, a group she co-founded in 2021 with friends and colleagues from Juilliard. The quartet is mentored by the Juilliard String Quartet—most notably Areta Zhulla and Roger Tapping—and their principal coaches include Natasha Brofsky and Joseph Lin. The Marian Quartet has performed around New York City at venues such as the Tenri Cultural Center for Music for Food, the David Rubenstein Atrium at Lincoln Center, and at Alice Tully Hall for their recital debut, among others. In April 2022, the group was honored to receive first Gold Prize at the 17th annual Saint Paul String Quartet Competition in Minnesota, judged by the Catalyst Quartet. The Marian Quartet has collaborated in performance with violists Masumi Rostad, Misha Amory, and Hsin-Yun Huang, as well as pippa virtuoso Wu Man, and folk musician and composer Rhiannon Giddens. Most recently, the quartet worked with Indian-American composer Reena Esmail for Juilliard’s “The New Series.” The quartet has also worked with members of the acclaimed Brentano, St. Lawrence, Aizuri, Kronos, Arianna, Harlem, American, and Jupiter quartets. Both individually and through endeavors with the Marian Quartet, Emma is a passionate advocate of education and community engagement, and strives to share her love for classical music.
Emma is honored to perform on an 1805 Vincenzo Turisano Panormo violin.
