GNMC News Pre-Pandemic

Our 2019 Fall Semester had just begun, and we were ready for another fantastic year of music making for Great Neck Music Conservatory students and faculty! Here are a few highlights of the year:

Just in – GNMC alumni (and son of GNMC Directors) Maxim Lando has received the 2020 Gilmore Young Artist Award, presented every two years to single out the most promising of the new generation of U.S. pianists, age 22 and younger. The year earlier, Maxim won the Young Concert Artists International auditions, and on November 7, 2019 presented  Solo Debut Recitals at The Kennedy Center and at Carnegie Hall’s Zankel Hall, which made The New York Times’s “10 Months of Classical Concerts You Won’t Want to Miss!”

GNMC clarinet student Eli Goldberger received a a rave review from Broadway World (BWW) for his debut performance as soloist with The Park Avenue Chamber Symphony: “Remember the name Eli Goldberger, because his is a name readers are sure to hear more from. The 16 year-old soloist for the evening exhibited talent far beyond his years. His handling of the two brilliant solo passages in the first movement was clean and nuanced, but also light and playful.”

Thirteen talented GNMC students and alumni performed as part of the eighth season of Oyster Bay Music Festival this past June 23-July 3! More than 25 public performances were held during eleven action packed music days at filled-to-capacity churches, synagogues, museums, art galleries, and even warehouses transformed into concert halls throughout the town of Oyster Bay. Participating musicians also performed additional concerts at local senior centers.

GNMC performers included Konatsu Iwai, Jason Li, Amy Suwannatat, Michelle Stern, Mizuki Natsu, Anna Natsu, William Tsay, Nicholas Bienenstein, Claire Chen, Darius Fan, David Elyaho (alumni), and Eli Goldberger.

Once again GNMC students dazzled the audience at our annual Gala Concert at Carnegie Hall! Attendees were surprised and amazed by the talent and dedication of the student solo performers, chamber music, and incredible ensemble work of Laura Broverman’s GNMC Strings.

GNMC students this past year placed extremely high in music competitions such as American Protégé and Concert Festival; scored high on NYSSMA evaluations (many receiving scores of 100), and were accepted in prestigious music programs at Juilliard, Manhattan School of Music, and Mannes Pre-Colleges. Instrumental and vocal students were placed in All County, All State, and All Eastern ensembles. GNMC’s Amy Suwannatat was one of 12 pianists in the state selected for NYSSMA’s Piano Showcase in Rochester. Most importantly GNMC students formed new friendships through music, cultivating skills that will continue to bring joy and deepening enrichment for a lifetime!
