Day 5 – The Rehearsal, the Masterclass & the Concert!
Friday, July 6th
I woke up to practice today, the difference being that today I was to practice with Soon on our Schumann Fantasy Piece. Let me just tell you, this rehearsal must have been a sign of what was to come in master class because he was playing it so fast!
The plan for the group today was to visit the National Archeology Museum of Umbria. It’s located next to the Church of San Domenico. This is because the building that all the Etruscan, Roman, and Pre-historic artifacts are housed in used to be the cloisters or monastery of the church. We first visited the church since it was right in front of the museum. The interior was very dark and light only came in through stain glass windows. There was a beautiful, painted gold organ.
The only downfall to Italian museums, or at least museums in areas that aren’t too touristy, is that there isn’t enough information in English. I would have loved to learn more about the objects I saw!
So now I come to the story about master class. I wasn’t expecting genius to flow out of my fingertips, but I sure didn’t expect what actually happened! I didn’t do very well. I stopped in the middle about two times and we were not very together throughout the entire piece! That’s what happens when two people have two very different interpretations of one piece.
Tonight was the first concert of the series! Luckily, none of the students had to be nervous because it was the Faculty Concert. It started at 9:00 in the evening! I don’t know about everyone else, but I was definitely tired! Jason even fell asleep during some of the performance! Though it was late, the concert was a hit. The applause was roaring, especially in such an echo-y hall!
